How to Play Andar Bahar — Full Guide

Andar Bahar is a fast, even-money guessing game from South India. One “joker” card is revealed, then cards are dealt to two piles — Andar (inside) and Bahar (outside) — until a card matching the joker’s rank appears. You simply bet which side it lands on.

Andar Bahar game — how to play guide

Andar Bahar Rules

  • A single 52-card deck is used. The dealer turns up one middle card — the game (joker) card everyone is trying to match.
  • You bet on which side, Andar or Bahar, the first card of matching rank will appear.
  • Cards are dealt alternately to the Andar and Bahar piles; the round ends the instant a card of the same rank as the joker is dealt.
  • By tradition the first card goes to the side opposite the joker’s colour, which gives that side a tiny edge.

How to Play Andar Bahar Step by Step

  1. Wait for the joker. The dealer reveals the middle card that decides the round.
  2. Place your bet. Choose Andar or Bahar; some tables also offer side bets on how many cards it will take.
  3. Watch the deal. Cards drop alternately onto the two piles.
  4. Match ends the round. When a card equal in rank to the joker lands, that side wins.
  5. Collect your payout. Winning Andar/Bahar bets pay close to even money, with a small difference between the two sides.

Betting & Odds

Because one side usually receives the first card, it wins slightly more often while the other side pays marginally more. Over many rounds the two sides are almost perfectly balanced — it is essentially a coin flip.

Tips & Winning Strategy

  • Stick to flat, even-money bets on Andar or Bahar.
  • Treat every round as independent — there are no “hot” sides.
  • Use the card-count side bets sparingly; they pay more but hit rarely.
  • Decide your stake per round in advance and keep it constant.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Doubling your bet after a loss (the martingale) — it risks your whole bankroll for a small gain.
  • Believing a side is “due” after a streak.
  • Betting more than you planned because a round “feels” certain.
